Perhaps the easiest way to identify phony parts, many times counterfeit manufacturers in China lack the ability to properly replicate the marking on the part package. Things like incorrect font, misspelled words, incorrect part number, logo or country of origin can be an easy sign that the part isn’t genuine.
Here is the manufacturer's label of ALTERA EP3C55F484I7N:
One of the most obvious indicators is the inconsistency in the font used. The counterfeit chip often displays a font that is either too bold, too thin, or simply not matching the original manufacturer's standard. Additionally, spelling errors can be a dead giveaway. A genuine part will never have misspellings, as these are typically caught during the quality control process.
Another key area to examine is the part number. Counterfeiters may attempt to mimic the original part number, but they often fail to get it exactly right. Even a slight deviation can indicate a fake. Similarly, the logo on the part should be scrutinized. Authentic parts will have a logo that is clear, well-defined, and consistent with the brand's official design. Any blurriness, distortion, or misalignment should raise suspicion.
Lastly, the country of origin can also be a clue. While it's not uncommon for parts to be manufactured in various countries, counterfeiters might falsely label the origin to deceive buyers. If the part claims to be from a country known for high-quality manufacturing but exhibits signs of poor craftsmanship, it's likely a counterfeit.
Components can be tested with X-ray inspection to verify their authenticity. As its name suggests, this process works just like a normal X-ray and allows you to view the internal contents of the part. This process can identify indicators like:
Missing or inconsistent die sizes
Visible delamination
Broken or missing wire bonds
If the part is RoHS-approved, X-ray inspection can be used to confirm its lead-free status, something that counterfeiters often overlook.
Physical Deformities
As mentioned above, some counterfeit parts are resurrected from scrap electronics and sold off as new. In this scenario, some physical wear and tear can be visible, such as bent leads or scratch marks. These should tip you off to possible authenticity issues with your parts.
